State: SmartStart
Success Continues SmartStart is an online job assistance program for recruiting and training junior enlisted service members leaving the military, and moving them into well-paying civilian careers. The program, provided through Clayton College & State University's Division of Continuing Education, was originally funded by a $927,000 U.S. Department of Labor grant in 2001. A second U.S.government grant extended the program through Apr. 30, 2004. SmartStart, provided at no cost to veterans, supports junior enlisted military personnel (grades E-2 to E-5) serving at any U.S. military installation. The SmartStart online program has expanded rapidly to U.S. military installations worldwide from its initial launch in Atlanta in mid-2002. The non-credit training is job-specific and directly related to the skills and education requirements of the program's corporate partners. SmartStart's four most recent placements include three from the U.S. Army - Sgt. Thomas Black and Sgt. Dewey Henderson of Ft. Gordon, Ga., Cpl. Manuel Guzman of Ft. Carson, Co., and U.S. Marine Cpl. Guye Akins of Camp LeJeune, N.C. Jim Zills, manager of the Transition Assistant Program (TAP) at Ft. Gordon, aided the SmartStart program by organizing an on-site testing and interview session with Southern Company. Security positions were offered to each of the four service members in September 2002. Southern Company was recently named one of "America's Most Admired Companies" by Fortune magazine. With nearly four million customers and more than 37,000 megawatts of generating capacity, Atlanta-based Southern Company is the premier super-regional energy company in the Southeast and a leading U.S. producer of electricity. great and wide variety of programs-a few are: "All I want to do is
E-Mail", "Video Editing", " Making & Saving Money
on EBay", "Teen Suicide" "Wilderness Search and Rescue
Program" (they also note in the ad that this program was
recognized by GAEA as the 2002 State-Wide Outstanding Innovative

Two great feedback tools are listed in their catalog as well. "Which computer class is right for me", ask the participant 12 questions and then gives and evaluation at the end and helps them select the right computer course! Also, love the evaluation tool on the back page of the catalog, "Tell it like it is!" covering a review of the catalog, courses, web site, and tell us about you. Participants mail or fax in evaluation. Great idea West Georgia! |
| If you want your catalog and programs to be reviewed for the next GAEA newsletter, e-mail Joyce Trivieri: jtrivier@gpc.edu We would love to hear from you! |
